For centuries coastal Oregon was fully an area of Indian occupation. These people's names designated the headlands, waterfalls, fishing holes, berry-picking sites and village locations. The first recorded white intrusion into this Indian world occurred in the summer of 1788. That year Captain Robert Gray, an American, sailed his vessel, the Washington, close to the shore at Roads End. That August the Indians who lived in the villages between the outlet of Devil's Lake and the Salmon River sighted this vessel and some v entured out in their canoes to observe these visitors. At that time it is likely that the Salmon River Indians occupied the area now known as Roads End.
In 1936 there were just five cottages on the beachfront in Roads End. In the 1950 telephone directory there were 20 residents listed for Roads End. A t that time everyone was listed in the directory whether they had a phone or not. At the head of each locale's listing was a little article about the area that sometimes carried a little history with it. The Roads End article was as follows:
"Roads end, in the far northwest corner of Lincoln County, is reached via Roads End Drive, which branches off the coast highway above Wacoma Beach. A secluded beach of rare charm, it lies at the foot of scenic cliffs where churning knives of the sea have spent centuries digging out strange and beautiful caves. The shoreline is rich in marine life and semi-precious stones.Several decades ago wild horses roamed in this area; now their stamping grounds are covered with a nationally known variety of peas.
There is an enchantment about Roads End that the visitor never quite forgets."
